MaterialScore
MaterialScore evaluates building products across four dimensions: environmental impact, health, transparency, and practicality. Simply enter the name of a product or brand, e.g. "Kalkfarbe Kreidezeit" or "Osmo Hartwachs-Öl". The tool researches publicly available information and returns a structured score with explanations.
Scores draw on publicly available data. Any gaps are filled with transparent estimates, clearly labeled. Manufacturers can improve their score by publishing product data, certifications, and safety data sheets.
How we evaluate
MaterialScore combines AI-powered research with human expert review — so every score is traceable, not just generated. Each evaluation draws on publicly available sources: data sheets, certifications, and manufacturer information. Where data is missing, we say so.
Environment & Sustainability
Where does this material come from, and what does it leave behind? We look at raw material sourcing, energy embedded in production, CO₂ footprint, and end-of-life recyclability.
Health
Is it safe to work with, live with, and dispose of? We check harmful substances, VOC emissions, indoor air quality impact, and what the safety data sheet actually says.
Transparency
Does the manufacturer actually back their claims? We look at certifications, declarations, and technical documentation — and flag where marketing language isn't supported by facts..
Practicality
A sustainable material only works if it's actually usable. We assess market availability, price range, and how suitable it is for DIY or professional application.
